This is not because I’m not interested in reading the sequel, which is this book. But despite how much I enjoyed that book, I am ashamed to admit I haven’t read the sequel until now. The Bone Shard Daughter was my favorite fantasy debut of the year 2020. One year and a half since its publication, I finally read The Bone Shard Emperor by Andrea Stewart. “Old men always think they know better than everyone else, even when the world has long since changed around them.” The Bone Shard Emperor is a compelling sequel with a focus on politics and character development. After his discharge, he got a job covering local politics at Newsday, and later moved to sports. Army, including a tour in Vietnam in 1968. After college, Nack enlisted and served a two-year hitch in the U.S. "He was a great American prose stylist,’’ wrote Ebert in 2008, part of long homage to Nack’s erudition and his love of books and words. Nack went to the University of Illinois, where he met Roger Ebert. As a child growing up in Skokie, Illinois, he worked cleaning a neighbor’s horses’ stalls and in his teens, he started going to the racetrack with his father. It was almost preordained that Nack would become the greatest turf writer in history. Pure Heart, written several months after Secretariat was euthanized, was a passionate remembrance of a transcendent racehorse but also of a man who had immersed himself in the story, and now found himself counting the passing of years and tasting the familiarity of his own tales. His story entitled Pure Heart, published in the Jissue of Sports Illustrated, was an emotional remembrance of the horse and the story that was the centerpiece of Nack’s career, Big Red’s run to the Triple Crown in the spring of 1973. The palette upon which Nack painted his most vivid portraits was horse racing, particularly Secretariat. That Kentucky Derby was run in September due to a COVID-19 postponement, so a better parallel may be 2015, when American Pharoah won an 18-horse race that saw four scratches prior to post. 18 Authentic, who started furthest on the outside, beat No. It will be the smallest field to start the race since 2020, when No. With just three alternates available for the Derby, Forte's scratch reduces the size of the field to 18 horses. No immediate reason was given for Forte's removal, which came following a morning workout, though the horse stumbled during an on-track workout on Thursday. The storyline of Derby week has been the number of horses scratched from the race, as four were removed from the field in a 24-hour period from Thursday to Friday before morning-line favorite Forte became the fifth horse scratched on Saturday roughly 10 hours before post time. Equal parts party and pageantry, the Derby has been staged every year at Churchill Downs without interruption since the inaugural running on May 17, 1875. The country's oldest, continuously held major sporting event returns on Saturday when 20 3-year-old horses leave the starting gate in the 2023 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. |
